(Osaka, Nara and Hiroshima) are
closer than you may think.
Osaka
A large city port known as Osaka is the commercial center on the Japanese island of Honshu. You can easily reach it by Shinkansen from Kyoto station with a laid-back 15-minute ride. It costs 1420 yen.
The shogunate Osaka Castle built in the 16th- century, is the main historical landmark of this exceptional city. In many ways it's the soul of Japan. While Tokyo is polished and classy, Osaka is laid back and down-to-earth. It's a great place to experience a large, modern Japanese city in all its glory. The city is all about great food (lots of it) and shopping – try to shop for a bargain.
Best of all, Osaka is packed with friendly and easy-going citizens who are accustomed to foreign visitors.
Nara
The train ride to Nara only takes about 45 minutes.
The first permanent capital of Japan is one of the most rewarding destinations. Arrive in the morning in Nara (another former capital which has an immense cultural legacy second only to Kyoto's.
This picturesque city is truly charming. Take the morning to discover Todaiji Temple which houses the magnificent Daibutsu, a 15- metre-tall- bronze statue of Buddha. You will also see the famous Sika deers believed to be the messengers of the Shinto gods. Perhaps stroll around Isui-en, a prime example of a Meiji-era garden.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima station is 1 hour and 40 minutes from Kyoto on the bullet train.
Consistently voted as one of the most liveable cities in the country, Hiroshima is still an under-appreciated destination spot on a first-timer's Japan bucket list. Discover the stunning Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a place to commemorate the destruction and sufferings of war. From the many amazing places around Hiroshima we recommend you to take a short trip to the sacred island of Miyajima and visit the floating Itsukushima shrine which is one of the 3 scenic spots of Japan. If you are around, it is a must to try the Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, which is one of the best dishes Japan has to offer.
